In today’s fast-paced world, it’s important to remind ourselves of the impact our food and drink choices have on our health. While sugar is undoubtedly a delicious indulgence, excessive consumption can lead to various health issues, including obesity, which has become the biggest problem in our generation, no pun intended.
One of the most effective ways to improve your health is reducing sugar intake. Fortunately, there are many low-sugar drink options that you can incorporate into your diet. While most people know that this can help lower the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, it’s crucial to highlight that low-sugar drinks offer several other health benefits that are often overlooked.
Here are some of them:
Reduces Body Inflammation
Inflammation is an integral part of the body’s immune response. When foreign invaders like bacteria or viruses attack our bodies, our immune system releases white blood cells to fight off the infection. These white blood cells release cytokines (specialized proteins) to help fight off the infection.
Cytokines are released in response to physical injury and certain foods, such as sugar. When they’re released in excess, they can cause chronic inflammation throughout the body. According to studies, it becomes dangerous and leads to heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Reduces Risk of Gout Attacks
Gout is a painful type of arthritis that affects the joints, especially the big toe. It occurs when there is a buildup of uric acid in the blood, leading to the formation of urate crystals in the joints. High sugar intake, particularly from fructose-containing beverages, can increase the production of uric acid in the liver, which can contribute to the development of gout attacks.
Studies have shown that high levels of fructose can increase the production of purines, which are broken down into uric acid in the body. Excess uric acid can then accumulate in the joints, causing the inflammation and pain associated with gout attacks.
Reduces Tooth Enamel Erosion
High amounts of sugar can increase the risk of tooth enamel erosion due to demineralization. When bacteria in the mouth break down sugars and carbohydrates, they produce acids that can dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, the hard, protective outer layer of the teeth. Demineralization can lead to the formation of cavities and tooth decay over time.
In addition, high sugar intake can also lead to a decrease in saliva production, which plays a crucial role in neutralizing the acid produced by bacteria and protecting tooth enamel. Therefore, reducing high sugar intake and practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing regularly, can help maintain good dental health.
Improves Hydration
Drinking water is the most effective way to hydrate the body, as it contains no calories or sugar; however, it can be tedious and bland.
Low-sugar beverages such as tea and coconut water can supplant this dullness and sustain hydration by providing fluids and electrolytes without the added sugars that can contribute to dehydration, resulting in symptoms such as thirst, fatigue, headache, and decreased cognitive function.
